Description
by Carl Gustav Carus, c. 1833-35. The Baroque manor house at Milkel, near Dresden, is depicted from its rear garden in an atmosphere of deep calm. Two windows glow softly, revealing a human presence—the sign of someone awake late at night. Carus wrote that "supreme reality is manifest both inwardly, through the rational mind, and outwardly, through nature," a duality represented in this painting by lamplight and moonlight.
