Artist's Description
By Thomas Cole, 1836. Long known as "The Oxbow," this work is a masterpiece of American landscape painting. The picture was shown at the National Academy of Design in 1836 as, "View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm." (But it is commonly referred to as The Oxbow.) There are both sketchbook drawings with annotations and related oil sketches of this subject. Many other artists copied or imitated the painting.
On the hill in the far background, logging scars in the forest can be observed, which appear to form Hebrew letters. There is a tiny self-portrait of himself sitting on the rocks in the foreground with his easel.
Thomas Cole was the founder of the Hudson River School.
About Thomas Cole
In a world where there are rules to comply with, directions to follow and deadlines to be met, it's nothing short of liberating to work in a creative environment where I have complete and total artistic freedom. Nature walks and simply observing the world around me at my leisure, enables me to produce images that convey a sense of calm, beauty and joy. I'm a native New Yorker who spent many years in Hawaii before moving to my current home in Southern California.
