The building on the left is London Terrace apartments. This is where I grew up. The building was completed in 1931 and spans the entire block from 23rd to 24th street and 9th avenue to 10th avenue. There are about 1,000 apartments in the buildings. The photo is taken from The High Line, which was an abandoned, elevated railroad track when I lived there. So when I walked the High Line for the first time, it was really cool to see my old apartment from a new perspective.
I like how much is going on in this photo. You can see a taxi cab crossing over the double yellow line as he tries not to hit the guy on the bike. A couple of people are walking their dogs, someone just picked up dry cleaning and a few are carrying their grocery bags. I like the "no guns" sign on the building on the left. Just across the street is the FDNY ambulance. Just another typical day in NYC.
In a world where there are rules to comply with, directions to follow and deadlines to be met, it's nothing short of liberating to work in a creative environment where I have complete and total artistic freedom. Nature walks and simply observing the world around me at my leisure, enables me to produce images that convey a sense of calm, beauty and joy. I'm a native New Yorker who spent many years in Hawaii before moving to my current home in Southern California.
