By Asher Brown Durand, 1848. Living and dead trees rise from the fertile decay of the forest floor. In the summer of 1854, Durand had made plein-air studies in the Catskill Mountains in preparation for this work.
I love Durand's work. He's is from Maplewood, New Jersey, the eighth of eleven children. He was one of the finest engravers in the country until his interests turned to oil painting aroumd 1830.
In a world where there are rules to comply with, directions to follow and deadlines to be met, it's nothing short of liberating to work in a creative environment where I have complete and total artistic freedom. Nature walks and simply observing the world around me at my leisure, enables me to produce images that convey a sense of calm, beauty and joy. I'm a native New Yorker who spent many years in Hawaii before moving to my current home in Southern California.
