Description
A beautiful landscape painting by one of my favorite artists, Asher Brown Durand. 1850. The original is on display at The Met Fifth Avenue, gallery 759. You can see a castle ensconced into the mountains and a funeral taking place beneath the trees. The work was inspired by William Cullen Bryant's poem "Thanatopsis," which means "a consideration of death." Here are the first few lines of the poem:
him who in the love of Nature holds
Communion with her visible forms, she speaks
A various language; for his gayer hours
She has a voice of gladness, and a smile
And eloquence of beauty, and she glides
Into his darker musings, with a mild
And healing sympathy, that steals away
Their sharpness, ere he is aware.
