Description
The Miami Beach Boardwalk begins at Indian Beach Park at 46th Street and Collins Ave. It continues south to 23rd Street where it becomes a paved surface. The paved portion of the boardwalk continues through the Ocean Drive Promenade to 5th Street. South of 5th street there is also South Pointe Park which provides nice views of the port of Miami.
The Boardwalk is approximately 4 miles long. This image is right in front of the famed Fontainbleau hotel at 41st Street and Collins Ave. You'll see "no biking" signs all over the Boardwalk and you'll also see lots of people riding bikes. One of those rules that no one pays attention to I guess.
If I remember correctly, this Boardwalk did not exist in the 1970s when I visited Miami as a kid. All of the vegetation and dunes on the right were added for preservation purposes. Back in the day, you could walk along the beach and walk right up to any hotel. Now you can walk right up to the Boardwalk but every hotel has a locked security gate with security guards in suits. I kept thinking, how can they can tolerate being in a dark suit in the hot humid weather.
